How to build a Swim Team Ready Bench?

I have to do a service project for my Boy Scout Troop and our idea was to build a ready bench. They are the benches that the swimmers sit on before they get to the diving blocks.

I assume it is two pieces of wood and then a support piece connecting the two and then two [x] shape pieces to use as the legs. Am I correct?

We got 2 x 8's and bolted them to drywall buckets - cheap, easy and easy to take apart for storage.  We painted them and painted the lane numbers (these are for swim meets) on them.
