  1. Look for structural components that are already available.  My next door neighbor created a playhouse using the frame of a swingset.   You can throw a plastic sheet over it to create a "roof".    You can also just go buy a plastic one from a resale store, or pick one up at a garage sale.  And, there are some relatively inexpensive fabric one's that come with  poles to stiffen the frame.

You might also want to watch for end of summer sales on arbors or sunshades.  You might find something that is a good start on a playhouse.

If you build one, be careful that your structure is architecturally sound.   You would not want to risk anything heavy collapsing on your kids.  For this reason, lighter materials might be the way to go, if you are going to "ad lib" it.

  2. four walls, floor and metal roof.

  3. I would just go to a supermarket or furniture store, someplace with big boxes and ask for extra boxes......take it outside or put it in the basement and let the kids decorate it and that's all you need.

  4. Blankets over the back of chairs.

If you've got a few months & a sunny space, grow 'sunflower walls' for a great outside play house.  Or, put up a teepee made of bamboo stakes (about $10 for a dozen at home depot), then plant vining bean & pea seeds all around it.

My kids just bought a 'Cranium Ocean Adventure Fort' on sale for $12 at Toys R Us, yesterday.  They may buy a 2nd one today, to expand the set.  It's very interactive & they are building their own playspaces with it.
