How to build a garage door?

Hi! this is for a science projet! how can i build a garage door?

There are several types of garage doors.  You have a solid one piece overhead door, a sectional overhead door and double swinging barn type doors.  I am assuming that you are talking about the more modern sectional overhead door with a track on both sides.  For parts (hinges etc.) check out www.overheaddoorparts.com.  There you can get the hardware.  The rest is simply a matter of determining how you are going to buid your sections.  Most wood garage door sections are long skinny picture frames with panel inserts.  And that is basically how you build them, take your trim material and dado a groove out and slip your panel insert in the groove with some wood glue and you have it.  So really it is a matter of your imagination as to what the insert panel material will be and what your frame material will be.  It can be as simple as a 2x4 frame with plywood insert.  As far as longer material goes, by finger jointing or ship lap methods you can basically take any material and keep splicing it together up to any length you wish.  Go to a large home improvement store or even a neighbor who has an overhead door and make a list of hardware you need, see how many panels make up the sectional parts etc.  Draw out your plans and go for it..I hope this information helps.

what type?? a door to walk through?? a double size (16ft)  single (8 or 9 ft) you want garage door opener on it??? what theroy you trying to do?? electrics, lever, motion ????? you will also need a short wall....   you can use popsicle sticks, hard cardboard, thin paneling, small hinges, depending on the style door you want to build!!!  Good Luck!!

Before You Get Started:

Draw up plans and design before you build your garage. These can be done by an architect or purchase them online.

Decide on the type of materials you want to use to build your garage. For the exterior of your garage you can choose bricks, siding or stucco. For the interior of your garage you need to decide on hardware, light fixtures, texture of mud on drywall and paint color if needed.

Engineered plans are a must. This is crucial for proper building of the project.

Apply for necessary permits following city guidelines.

Start Your Project:

Grade the lot that you are planning to build your garage on.

Form and pour foundation. Be sure that you do not pass the property lines or PUEs.

Snap lines, frame the walls and install windows.

Frame and deck the roof, then install tar paper and then install the shingles.

Put in rough electrical. This will require you to hire a licensed electrician in most cases.

Mount exterior wall and install soffit. For example, you can choose brick, stucco, or siding.

Finishing Your Project:

Staple the insulation to the inside of the exterior wall.

Hang drywall, mud, tape, float, and texture. Paint the walls after 24 to 48 hours depending on humidity.

Finish electrical trim out.

Place in opening 2 feet 8 inches by 6 feet 8 inches size door in back of garage.

Install roll-up garage door and garage door opener if elected.

Paint exterior if needed, depending on materials chosen for the exterior of the garage.

Fill garage with your stuff.
