Okay, so I'm sure you guys have seen these gorgeous, huge, EXPENSIVE floor mirrors that seem to be pretty popular right now. Well I'm dying to have one in my bedroom but I refuse to pay out the wazzoo for one so I'm thinking of just making my own. We have a glass company here in town so the mirror itself won't be hard to come by. I'm thinking this...get the mirror, glue it onto some sort of sturdy backer board and then frame out the edges with molding that you can pick up @ Lowes. Will this work?

  1. Not sure, I'm very lazy and wouldn't bother with this. I think by the time you finish you won't be saving so much money. There are some low priced floor mirrors out there on the websites. I was just on a site called www.notjustmirrors.com it has some very nice reasonable priced floor mirrors. No need to work hard!!!

  2. I've made a few of those and there's a little more to it than that if you want it to be structurally sound and look nice. With 1/8" mirror, the framing must be sturdy enough to hold the glass stiff otherwise, the glass will twist and break if there isn't enough support, or, in your case, bow as it leans against the wall.

Make the frame to the dimensions you want the mirror, rabbet the back of the frame so it will accept the mirror, then use as the 1/4" plywood as the backer.  you can purchase hardware to hold the backer in tight.

  3. Only partly. You need a stand don't you? Well the stand will require more effort than you may be capable of. It will also need special hardware to attach the frame to the stand. The hardware has to be able to be tightened to hold the mirror in one position. If I were you, I'd just get the old wazoo ready for payout!
