  1. I searched with no results on free plans, but what I did see is basically a metal 55 Gal. drum that had a removable lid. I am guessing they have to have a hinged door at the base and probably used the drums lid with a series of holes in it as a separator inside the drum.

But considering there's 110 pages to the booklet they sell, I'm thinking there's got to be a easier way.

  2. Try your library.  I looked at the cover of the book and it looks like little more than a 55 gal. drum housing.  I will assume there are two racks inside and a water holder of some type.  Keep hunting on the web, I'm sure there are numerous plans out there.

  3. Try to find and OLD-OLD refrigerator, one that is all metal or porclin on the inside.   cut a small hole in the back and a small hole in the top with a home make stack with a damper.  Get small fire started inside.  Make sure it is contained Bucket or the like,  You want all smoke and very little heat,  200 or so.  Remember you want Smoke.  Use Apple or a nut tree for wood.  Green wood is good. It smoke.  It should take about 8 -10 hours. Invite me over and we'll enjoy...
