.Closed to new investors; not current ones. Leq said that he had found a way, but did not divulge info. I know this is one of Dan Weiner's crowings....anyone know? Leq? Share the wealth?

  1. Hi, Countess,

    There're plenty of Vanguard mutual funds, and exchange traded funds from many companies, that you can buy that are good investments.

    Why waste time thinking about about one that's closed?

    Unless you're just attracted to what you can't have :)

    best, Rick

  2. If you own it, often times you can buy more...But closed usually means closed...good luck

  3. They did this to one of my investments a while back. I could unload it if I wanted to but could not add to it. When a fund starts growing too much too fast they do this to protect it.

  4. Mutual fund shares do not trade (they are redeemed by the fund), so unfortunately the idea of buying from someone to make you an owner is not possible . . HOWEVER, a share (or more) can be gifted (given) to you - therefore making you an owner, and allowing you to buy.

  5. Jon B is correct in the gifting thing, that's one way dan Weiner says to do it.  The only other way - sometimes when a fund closed to new investors, if a 401k administrator (or plan) is a current owner, new employees can still buy into the fund (or current employees can change to the fund).  {Underline and bold face the word "sometimes."}

  6. Closed to new investors means closed.

    I don't know if you can buy a little from somebody that owns it and have shares transferred to you. Then as a current owner you sometimes can buy more depending on if it is open to current investors for purchases. Sometimes they are, sometimes not.

    I think I have heard of people doing that.

    But that could be prohibited by a particular fund. dunno.
