Salvage auctions are pretty much like any other kind of car auction, except you need to do a much more thorough job of inspecting the cars to find out what's wrong with them and if they are repairable at a reasonable cost. And of course, you can't drive them away -- you must haul them. Or you might be just buying for parts. Here's an article that has a lot of information about salvage sales and auctions:

  4. I work for the worlds largest reseller of salvage and insurance claim cars - Copart (www.copart.com)

    In most states, you have to be a registered dealer, body shop, dismantler or exporter in order to buy these vehicles.  Since they have been declared salvage or total loss, they cannot be resold to the public.  Only after they have passed though one of the previously mentioned businesses can they be offered for resale
