  1. slater houses thats were they are sent some times its horible you dont want a race horese there high strung and very scared but if you do want one try contacting the joky club

  2. Ex-racers make great companion, trail, and competitive mounts once they are retrained by a knowledgeable individual.  I own two ex-racers myself, one who has been off the track less than a year and raced from 2-6 years old.  My other is 22 years old and still going strong.  Both mares have Native Dancer in their bloodlines, as well as Seattle Slew and War Admiral.

OTTBs (Off track Thoroughbreds) have been taught to deal with all sorts of strange sights and sounds.  Many things that bother other horses don't bother ex-racers.  Also, they have been clipped, bathed, handled, trailered, etc. practically every day since they were very young and have a strong work ethic; their fun, inquisitive personalities are unmatched by other breeds.  OTTBs are NOT crazy as so many people like to believe.  An added bonus of buying/adopting an OTTB is that you can research their racing careers, learn how many races they ran and what sort of prize money they won, and nowadays can even watch their recorded races!

Although you certainly won't find horses of Cigar, Barbaro, or Street Sense's calliber being sold/adopted through OTTB rescue organizations, it is possible to find highly athletic mounts that can easily take you up in the competitive world.  What's more, prices for OTTBs range all the way from free to the low thousands, usually no more than $5,000 max.  My favorite sites to visit are: www.bitsandbytesfarm.com; www.horseadoption.com; www.canterusa.org.

  3. Try this link.  I was looking for one in particular but I cannot remember the name, so, I found this one and looks like they have many members.  http://www.bluehorsecharities.org/who-we...

  4. Yes!! I have worked quite a bit with an adoption agency called "New Vocations" located near Dayton Ohio. They also have farms in Columbus OH, Saline MI and Chattanooga TN.

I have both donated horses to, and adopted from, this agency. They fully screen their adopters and there is usually a small fee, but sometimes the horses are completely free.

    Here is the website:   www.horseadoption.com

    Good luck!

  5. There are quite a few adoption groups that rescue, rehab and adopt out unwanted racehorses.  One of the larger ones, Canter USA also has a web-based classifieds for trainers and owners to post horses for sale.  Very often these horses are relatively cheap $500-3000.  Check out http://www.canterusa.org for more information.

If you are near a track you can usually put up a 'wanted' sign in the track tack shop, kitchen, or guard shack.  Depending on the quality of track in your area you may get something to your liking.
