Question:

How to calculate the rent?

I'm renting a 2-bedroom flat with my friends. There are three of us. My friends will share the master bedroom while myself take the standard room. Total rent including council tax would be 663 pounds per month. They say halve the rent, that is, each room 331.50 pounds, but let me pay 300 pounds for my room and they divide the 31.50 among themselves. That means, I have to pay 300 pounds and two of them 181.50 pounds each. Do you think the way they calculate the rent is fair?

  1. 2 bedroom  flat you  have one room your friend has the other that half each but she is allowing her friend to join her ,thats nothing todo with you  you have your room she has hers..

If you cannot see what we are saying is right  you  should not move in together your discount and pleased about the  council tax is devided by 3   WATER GAS ELECTRIC ????

be different if you said one was by size a double room the other a single or broom cubbard  then you would rightly have a gripe but having the label master  doesnot mean larger

more often mean front of house and more street noise

I think you wouldbe happier on your own get a cheap bed sit  for yourself

  2. No.   It doesn't sound completely fair.  Presumably you are also sharing other common facilities like the bathroom, kitchen, living room, storage and laundry rooms.   Because of all that common shared space a 25% - 25% - 50% division doesn't seem equitable.   I would agree that they should have SOME advantage since they are sharing the bedroom, but I would think a more equitable split would be something like ...  40% - 30% - 30% ... or 265.20 - 198.90 - 198.90.  Or something similar.

  3. I would say to split the council tax evenly. Then you pay 250 pounds and they pay 350 pounds between them (175 pounds each). They are getting the master bedroom. And, even if it were 1 person living in the master, I would say he/she owes more for the master than you would for the standard.

And, if it doesn't seem fair that they individually pay less than you, consider that you don't have to share your room with anyone.

  4. i've been in the same situation but the other way around , i was part of the couple ,and we split it just like g man said... we all sat down and came to an agreement. we still had the benefit of sharing the room , but not the benefits that your  sharing couple seem to have . !!! i presume you know them  , so sit and have a chat . good luck hope it works out .

  5. Separate the council tax from the rent and split that three ways because you all make equal use of the councils services.

Then take the rent separately. Do you think it is fair to pay more for a room of your own? Probably yes, but you are presumably sharing bathroom, kitchen etc.

I think it fair you should pay more for one room on your own but not as much as £120 more than each of the others.

  6. Are they a couple as in "together" ?
