How to calm cat's fear of lightning & thunder?

I adopted a stray cat about 8 weeks ago. Every time it rains, especially when accompanied with lightning & thunder, he hides under the bed. No matter how I hold him, his whole body still shakes with fear. I'm concerned. Please help. I've never had a cat with such a fear before.

  1. I don't know if this will help, but it really works with my cats when they start to get scared of some noise.  I pretend to take a cat bath!  I make smacking noises with my mouth and hold my hand up to my mouth as though I'm l*****g it (but I don't really l**k my hand).  They look to me as their mother, so when they see that I am unconcerned about the noise, they calm down.  Crazy, but it works!

  2. This is normal my cat does the same thing they can hear things a lot louder than we do! just let him be and let him hide its fine!

  3. cats are frightened of thunder and lightning and unfortunately they don't grow out of it,mine are 15,16and 17 now,and they go and be where they feel safe away from it,some go behind settee, some in a dark cupboard and my male cat i have to put him in my bed under the duvet and leave the door partly open.

  4. If a cat is afraid of something, it probably won't get over it in a long time. Next time there is a storm, hold your cat or take it to a quieter place in the house and continually talk to it in a low, soft voice.

Most animals are calmed by this, hopefully, when the cat realizes that no harm will come to it, it will no longer be so afraid.
