  1. There are at least 30 different counting systems. Obviously not going to get into explaining them all. Just use google or buy a book. Look at stuff like Uston, Omega, KO, Red Seven and Hi-Opt.

Just for clarity counting doesn't work in any modern casino.

Edit: Card counting doesn't work because bet range at most casinos limit a counter excessively. Automatic shufflers decrease the number of shoes that deviate from the norm and since shuffle downtime is minimal there is no negative consequence from cutting an excessive amount off from the back of the shoe. Further casino staff are not retarded and will quickly pick up on anyone who has a betting pattern indicative of counting at which point they will simply increase the cut from the back.

I haven't held a job for 18 years and I choose gambling over being a lawyer because I'm good at it. I don't play house games but there isn't a house game or angle on a house game that I'm not intimately familiar with.

  2. There are dozens of card counting systems out there.  Like anything else you have to actually do some work on them.  You will need to read a book, and then study and practice for months before you can even hope to give yourself an edge.

You would also need to consider the EXACT rule variation for Blackjack at your local casino.  There are at least 3,456 different permutations of rules that are commonly available.  Some offer such a large house edge, that even counting cards would not help.

So you need to become an expert in the right rule combinations, an expert on the 200 or so possible hand combinations to master basic strategy.

Then you have to flawlessly pull all this knowledge together without making the casino suspicious.

There are probably a few hundred people in the world with the skills who can pull this off.  So don't hold your breath.

If the answer were something as simple as how the hi-low system works, we'd all be out in Vegas getting rich.

  3. "Just for clarity card counting doesn't work in any modern casino".

What the h**l is he on, why would the Principal not apply to a modern casino. Look at any of the books by Stanford Wong.

  4. The principals of card counting would apply at a modern casino just like they did 2 decades ago, except that the casinos have adjusted their rules.

With deep cuts and big shoes, or with an abundance of reshuffling, the card counters advantage is practically nil.  (You'd expect a casino manager to know this ...)

The single most important idea in counting is to increase your bets when the deck is 'benevolent', but that happens MOST frequently at the end of the deck.  At the early and mid-stages, there're just too many cards left for your count to matter.

Since the end of the deck isn't in play very often (because dealers are reshuffling before you get there) you'll find yourself counting and playing half a shoe with no real advantage, then watching the dealer shuffle it up and you have to start over ... and over ... and over ... and over.
