Question:

How to care for my six year old niece?

my sister was in a car accident two weeks ago and unfortunately died several days later from injuries. It was stated in her will that if anything should happen to her I would become the legal guardian of her six year old daughter as her father is not in the picture. For now, while everything is being straightened out my niece is staying with my parents, but I know that I have to take her soon as they are both retired and can not support her financially. What I want to know is what do I need to do to prepare to take care of her. Also what can I expect her to be like (i.e. what do six year olds know, what kind of activities will she want to participate in, what games and activities are appropriate for her age?)

  1. oh my gosh, Im so sorry.   Poor little girl, too.  :o(  6 year olds like Barbie, Hannah Montana, things like that.  Probably also likes shopping, movies, playing outside.  Soccer is very popular if you are looking for an activity to put her in.  Or swimming.  But let her decide, dont rush her or force her to do activities that she doesnt want to.  Good luck.

  2. First off, condolences on the loss of your sister. But, without knowing your niece or what she is like, it's kind of hard to say what she may or may not like, but maybe she would possibly be interested in something such as Dora the Explorer, or possibly the Disney princesses, such as Jasmine (from Aladdin), Ariel (Little Mermaid), Belle (Beauty & the Beast), etc. As for games for her age, maybe the Leapster/Leapfrog (I think that's the name, but not 100% sure?) learning series might have something for her level perhaps (at least they are educational, and 'child friendly').

  3. whow your sister thought the world of you.  If you were the older sibling it would probably explain a lot.  She probably remember being her daughter's age and having you as a big brother, and would probably want her daughter to have as much fun with you as she did.  Which is basically what you would have to do but with an adult authority (I hope I make sense).
