How to carve a stone

Question

I found a beautiful blood red stone on the shore of the snake river in Jackson Hole and wanted to save it as a memory of the fun times I had rafting. I would like to carve some words on it but I don't know the tools I need to use and I don't want to break the stone so.... Any suggestions on what tools? 10 points for the person who I successfully use their info to carve it
