  1. Once you have the reel on the rod, the line on the reel, and a weight (lure or bait or sinker) on the end of the line...

Hold the rod in your right hand, with two fingers on each side of the reel post. The reel is held under the rod.

Reach out your first finger and catch the line with it. Then "open" the bail (that's the wire thingy the line passes under). At this point, if your finger lets the line go, the weight should pull the line off the end of the spool -- if it doesn't, you've got something set up wrong.

To cast, bring the rod tip back behind you (with your finger holding the line), then swing it forwards, letting the line go before the rod reaches the vertical. Timing this release can be tricky for beginners. Ideally, the weight will fly up and forwards at about a 45 degree angle.

When the weight hits the water, turn the handle on the reel (with your left hand), and the bail will flip back into place so you can wind your line in.

Don't start by trying to cast a mile. toss it softly until you get a feel for casting.

(If you're left-handed and have a left-handed reel, reverse the hands in the description above.)

If you have a closed-face spinning reel (also called a spin-casting or push-button reel) it's a bit different. The reel sits on top of the rod, and the line release is controlled by a button you push with your right thumb. These reels have their handles on the right side, so after casting you reverse hands to reel them in.)

(I did a google search, but couldn't find any diagrams of how to cast, but I did find a site which gives a little overview of the different kinds of reels: http://wdfw.wa.gov/fish/youth/rodsandrel... )
