  1. Fishing for Redfish and Black Drum require 2 different techniques.

Redfish- (In my opinion), Redfish tend to like live bait (or a "moving lure") better than Black Drum. A chartruese/"new penny" colored curly-tailed Berkley Saltwater Grub or Swimming Mullet on a 1/4 OZ "wide gap" Jig can work (in many cases) just as well as Bait.

Bait- A Live Shrimp, finger Mullet, or Menhaden is your "best bet" for bait.

Inshore-If your using bait, rig with a bobber rig. Keeping your bait off the bottom a bit will keep you from catching saltwater Cats every other second. Saltwater Cats are a nuisance fish that are a pain to un-hook, (esp for a novice).

30LB test is too heavy, (if your fishing inshore or off a pier). If your offshore, 30LB might be too light.

14LB-17LB Mono would be about as heavy as you would WANT to get for inshore fishing. 12LB would be optimum for lures and Jigs. (You can also use the new braided lines like Power Pro 6/20. Personally, I use Power Pro 6/20 for my main line and a leader of 14-17LB Fluruocarbon.)

Black Drum- Black Drum love dead Shrimp, Oysters or Fiddler Crabs. They tend to not take lures readily. Offshore you would use cut-bait or bait-strips.

Both Drum love to hang around oyster bars in creeks and around inlets. Reds will "root around" on a high tide in Spartina grass. Look for their spotted "tails" breaking the surface. If I were you, I would fish inshore around bridges or creeks for Drum.

    Hope this helps? Good luck!

  2. Listen due It depends where in north carloina you are, If your on the coast like me I would definatly go to the beaches like atlantic or onslow, as far as bait, It all depends on what works best for you, and if you dont catch a drum youll probably catch something else.
