Question:

How to cater for/feed 100+ people at a farm in June -- my parents' 50th anniversary party.?

We're hosting an afternoon church reception for my parents' 50th anniversary -- with cake, light snacks, etc. Because it's out of the way, we told out-of-towners that they were welcome to come out to my parents' farm for dinner that night, thinking there might be 20-30 people who would stay. We're up to nearly 100 already, and the party is a month away. Any suggestions for something easy, not-too-expensive, that would work outdoors on a farm? We could set up buffet tables for food, but I don't think we have a place to set up large tables to seat people. HELP.

bbq is cheap and filling. people will love it. here is a guide to help to know how much of what to get to have enough for everyone.

  2. BBQ is an inexpensive easy way to go and would be perfect for the farm. Buy whole chickens and cut them up to make it more economical. For sides, have things like corn-on-the-cob, which is in season right now. Potato salad,  rolls, baked beans.

If you don't set up tables, you really should have some sort of seating. You can't expect people to stand around and eat, or even to stand and mingle. If you don't want to rent some tables, find some big logs and have those set up for people to sit on.

  3. make it a potluck and tell everyone FREE BEER for those of u that bring one or more dishes.  make sure u organize what everyone is bringing to help out with it, that way u can insure that ur not going to get 50 types of dessert and zero snacks, salads, or entrees.

  4. GOOD OLE FASHION BBQ , CHICKEN AND SPARE RIBS . HOME MADE SIDES THAT CAN BE MADE THE NITE BEFORE BY USEING FAMILY SECERT RECIPES. ON MEAT SIDE FIGURE 3/4 POUND PER SERVEING OF CHICK & RIBS PER PERSON AND 1/2 LBS ON EACH SIDE , THIS IS SO YOU'LL KNOW HOW MUCH TO BUY. HOPEFULLY  YOU  GOT A COSTCO OR SAMES CLUB OR PLAIN OLD WALMART. IF THIS IS TO COSTLY . BURGERS BENNIES AND WENNIES WILL HAVE TO DO AND THEN YOU NEED ORDER A KEG OF BEER FIGURE 60-70 BUCKS THERE ... AND DON'T FORGET THE TUNES

  5. Pig picking, no doubt.  Figure on each person eating a pound of pork (some will eat more than that, some less...so since you're having 100 people, order a 100lb. pig).  Boil some potatoes, make some slaw, and have hushpuppies or something.  Cheap-ish way to feed a big crowd.  See if you can borrow/rent tables from the local fire department or some friends.
