How to change from dynamic to static IP?

I'm using that site but I'm a little apprehensive to change to a static IP. First of all, I don't know if my IP is already static or not. How do I figure if I have a static IP already? Second of all, the computer I use is connected wirelessly to a router, the router is connected by a modem. Another wired computer connects to the router too. If I change to a static IP, will it make me get d/ced more or less(I d/c quite a bit already)? If the static IP doesn't work can I just switch back to dynamic and everything will be the same? Thank you.

  1. Since you are trying to port forward the STATIC IP you need is a LOCAL static IP on your local network. Its easy and yes switching back to dynamic is quite easy should you have issues - its a check box.

. Portforward has a guide to show you how to set a static IP. It basically works the same whether you are wired or wireless - an IP is an IP!

Before you do that, find out four things you need to know first.

Click Start - Run  in the screen type cmd  on the black screen type

ipconfig /all   write down the IP Address, Subnet mask, Gateway and DNS numbers.. IF that information says MANUAL SET -- you have a static IP but more than likely they will say AUTOMATIC  meaning they are Dynamic.

They will look like these below

    192.168.1.100

    255.255.255.0

    192.168.1.1

    192.168.1.1  DNS

Then follow this guide to set a static IP  use the Wireless adapter instead of the Local Area Adapter and enter the numbers

    http://portforward.com/networking/static...

(I will tell you that if your computer shows an IP like 192.168.1.100-150 you will be better entering an IP like 192.168.1.50 which is outside the DHCP range your router issues, this will prevent IP conflicts.

Generally local IPs being set to static work much better than those set to DHCP when talking about wireless and dropping connections!

  2. Call your ISP if you want to lease a static IP
