How to change lanes safely?

I've just passed the driving test and got my driver's license last week. I still have to practice more on the road. The hardest thing for me is how to change lanes safely. Do you have any tips?

I have been driving semis for 40 years,and I have seen alot of mistakes out there when it come to changing lanes,I commend you for wanting to know about this,I can give you a little advice,when watching your mirrors objects will be closer than you think,and when you learn through more experience on how to judge distance and speed you will be able to see how far and fast they are coming up on you so you don`t cut them off,watch those mirrors as you are changing your lane to make sure no one sneeks around you,and believe me they will do it,give yourself plenty of clearence,and always put your signal on prechanging,and make sure it tuns off so traffic is not confused, leave me a message if i can help you any further.

Just be really conscious about the cars around you and how fast their going. Make sure someone in front of you isn't changing lanes too or you might collide. mainly just be observant, always use your signal, and be smart.

Congratulations on passing your road test. It is very simple to change lanes, whether you are local or on the highway. Let's say you are on a three lane street, and you are all the way on the right. Put your left turning signal on. Look at your left mirror, then take half a second to look at your blind spot (turn your head left at a 90 degree angle to make sure that there is no car to your left). Once clear, change lanes. Do the same when you want to turn to the right lane.

make sure you look behind you... like turn your head to see out the back window.. but don't look for too long or else you could miss something... just use your mirrors and you should be fine. :)

Just make sure to always be aware of the cars all around you. To the left, to the right, in front, and in back of you. Check and double check your surroundings before you change into a different lane. Turn your blinkers on early so the cars around you get a heads up that you are about to change lanes and can avoid getting into your way. Always turn your head completely and look over your shoulder, not just the rear-view mirror. While changing lanes, do not slow down. Keep at the same speed or sometimes even speed up a little bit more. If you need to change into a lane where there is a car right next to you, slow down and let the car pass you more so you get a gap behind it and then move into the lane.

Look in your rear view and side view mirrors for other motorists and traffic.

Check your blind spots. The blind spot on most cars is around the middle of the car, near the left and right rear doors. This is an crucial step that is often forgotten. It is also something that any driving instructor will be incredibly vigilant about. Forget to check your blind spots and you will probably not pass any driving test.

Press your turning indicator down to turn on the left blinkers, or right to turn on right blinkers. Most modern cars will indicate to you which direction your blinkers are set with a small blinking light on the console.

Scan the mirrors and blind spots again to double check to make sure you are clear to switch lanes.

Turn into the desired lane with caution and purpose.

Make sure you check your mirrors as well as over the shoulder. Obviously you make sure you use your turn signal. Once you are clear, you smoothly switch lanes.
