  1. Citizenship is a complicated legal situation and really should not have much to do with who is and who is not "accepted."

(I speak from experience: my wife has dual citizenship and we are pursuing the same for our children. She checked to make sure this is possible and legal in the U.S. BTW: I have only U.S. citizenship.)

If your child has U.S. citizenship, be careful and check with the state department. You probably do not want to do anything that will jeopardize his U.S. status if he wants to work here. However, if he is also eligible for Japanese citizenship, that could be a major advantage if he wants to work or study in Japan later. Don't put your child at a disadvantage just because his father is so foolish as to not accept him.

As noted, check with the State Dept. or perhaps a lawyer specializing in international issues like this. (The local bar association can probably give you a reference.)

  2. according to Japanese law: If an unmarried Japanese father and non-Japanese mother have a child, and the parents later marry and the Japanese father acknowledges paternity, the child can acquire Japanese citizenship, so long as the child has not reached the age of 20. However, if the parents are not married at the time of birth and the father does not acknowledge paternity, the child will not acquire Japanese nationality.

Sorry if this doesn't help but unless you can change the law...
