Ok i know this might seem like a really dunmb ? but i do need help as i have never done any sort of house project before.

The cabinets in my bathroom are painted white (Plain with no gloss or other finish) and i want to change it to the hard wood finish to match the toilet seat. Do i just go and get the paint and paint directly over it or do i have to replace the whole thing.

  1. You will need to take the paint off the cabinet either by sanding or stripping it with a paint stripper. Apparently the toilet seat is stained not painted, which is two very different things.. Stain you brush on wipe off . It highlight's wood grain and gives it color. You might run in to a problem with the cabinet not being real wood. Perhaps that's why its painted. Its possible its MDF or just a a laminate coated MDF which you will not be able to stain. Until you take the paint off its hard too say. If it is real wood make sure you get all the paint off, stain it and I recommend top coating it with a polyurethane 2-3 coats especially because its in the bathroom. Polyurethane will protect it from water.

  2. First, check to see if it is wood, and if it is good looking wood you'd want to strip with a safe stripper, and finish.

If you want, you could also paint in a shade close to match the toilet seat, then buy another shade a bit darker (craft paint) then use a rubber comb for making woodgrain, but this would be time consuming and you would have to practice.

The other route could be if you find a woodgrain colored vinyl wallpaper to cover the cabinet, though not my favorite route.

You could replace the doors/drawer fronts with good wood ones, and just paint the rest a similar wood color.
