My boss is the manager of a group of receptionist for a doctor’s office. The office is open everyday, including weekends and holidays. There are 10 recptionists and we are allowed to pick a holiday that we want to work and every year Christmas has no volunteers. Since there are no volunteers she is going to draw 2 names out a cup. What are some suggests on how to choose an employee for this Christmas and how would you solve this problem for future Christmas'????

  1. choose a person who isnt doing anything special

or dosent believe in christmas. Like the true meaning of christmas

with jesus and lalala. but yeah do that cause they've nothing better to do if they dont even believe in christmas.

  2. choose by a rock-paper-scissors competition!... :)

    lol and let god decide

  3. At my office it's first come, first serve.  The people who have the holidays off this year, asked for it last year.  I started work at this office last month.  I was told that I would be required to work both Thanksgiving and Christmas this year, because those holidays had already been spoken for; but that I could go on the list to be off next year.  Still, there are several names before me for next year who have already asked off.  Their circumstances could change, maybe they will not be here next year.  My name moves closer to the top, the longer I am there. Perhaps 2010, I will have the holiday off.

The last office where I worked, used all the employees to work the holidays, but we only had to work 4 hours. It was easy to work around that schedule, as long as you didn't need to go out of town.

Meredith H  had a good idea.  Hire Jehovah's Witnesses or Jews.  They don't celebrate Christmas.  They will work on the holidays with no complaints.

It is expected that holiday pay is at least time + 1/2.  Some places I've worked payed double.

  4. I would go by seniority. The 2 people that were hired last have to work. That is how larger business do it.

My first route would be to see if there are any volunteers, if there are none, then go by seniority.

Another idea is rotate every year.  One year. "Betty and Elma" work, the next year " Lucie and Wilma" work, and so on.  This way, Someone is only working every 4 Christmas.

  5. Ask the manager if he/she would give triple pay on the Christmas holidays. That's bound to get people wanting to work on the holidays.

  6. There needs to be some kind of incentive for working Christmas, like say an extra day off, increased pay, etc.  Working Christmas really is missing out on important personal stuff, so if someone is going to give all that personal stuff up, they need to be compensated with something they really want, want badly enough that they think it is worth it.
