How to clean a burnt saucepan.

Preferably without chemicals, do you know how to remove the burnt residue from a pan.

  1. The lazy way (but it smells bad)....

    Fill up the pan with water and about 2 cups of vinegar (at least past the burned area) and put the lid on (or foil if there's no lid) and bring it to a boil for a couple of minutes - then let it sit for at least 20 min before you take the lid off.

    Next, use a scrub brush and get as much of the "gunk" off as possible.  Others mentioned baking soda and salt - they work as an abrasive but get diluted in water very easily.

    If the vinegar doesn't do it - then fill it up with water again and heat it up until it boils, then remove it from the heat - now add about 1/2 cup of ammonia (**NOTE**  don't get creative and mix vinegar and ammonia - they are not compatible and you're not trying to gas yourself) and let it sit until the water becomes room temp.  


  2. Bi-carb soda with water and boil then scrub - if it is still burnt on boild for longer making sure not to boil dry

  3. Put a heap of rock-salt in the pan with just a little bit of water, not to disolve the salt. Put a lid on the pan, then shake it vigorously. The rock-salt will help abrase the burnt stuff away.

  4. After you've cleaned what you can by soaking and scrubbing, as you would any other dirty dishes, use steel wool pads.  The chemical makeup of the soap on Brillo or SOS pads are no better or worse than the chemicals that makeup liquid dish soap.  You can use Barkeeper's Friend cleanser to shine it up when you're finished scrubbing it.

    Check the bottom of the pan to be sure metal parts didn't begin to separate from intense heat, before you use it again.

  5. I hope you will try my sure fire way of cleaning the most stubborn burnt on food on any pan or pot. Sprinkle on about a tablespoon of automatic dish washing detergent (meant for the dishwasher). Then add hot water to it to cover the burnt area. Let it sit for about an hour. Then without much scrubbing, just use a firm plastic bristle brush (not metal) and rub the pan and watch all the burnt stuff magically fall off. If all doesn't go in one try, try once more. Let me know if it works for you. It has always worked like a charm for me. The best part - NOT too much scrubbing.

  6. First , you have to soak it w/ hot water and dish soap, then scrape as much off as possible, then use a little baking soda to scrub the burned spot off completely.  Salt will also work - use a moist, but not wet sponge, the salt or baking soda has a very fine grit that helps to remove it.

  10. I've had to deal with that. Soap, baking soda, and a scouring pad will do the trick.

  11. Try an SOS pad.  But pans are so cheap now.  Just get a new one that is what I would do.  If it is a Teflon pan I would DEFINATELY throw it out because a lot of toxic chemicals are released when you burn those pans.  Then the chemicals go into your food.  Not a good idea.  GET A NEW ONE
