How to clean a futon/sofa cover?

I got a free futon/sofa thing with a removable cover. The cover is a thick velvety material. Can this be machine washed? I thought maybe because it was so easily removable that it was probably meant to be washed, but it's hard to tell. There's no tag or anything.

You can wash in warm or cold water. Hang it to dry or fluff in a cold dryer. Since the dryer does most of the shrinking I wouldn't dry with any heat but if its removable its probably washable. It sounds like its polyester which doesn't shrink but why take a chance.
