I just got a stove from my mother in law. And its been sitting in her garage for about two years. And she didn't clean the top part before she put in her garage. I'v tried sos and baking powder and just plain soap and water. The oven part and the racks I got cleaned. Does anyone know of what else I might try?

  1. Easy off works wonders and I swear by Mr Clean sponges

  2. Dampen the top slightly then sprinkle with bi-carb soda. Spray with white vinegar and when it 'fizzes' gently rub off using a balled up pair of old pantyhose. Repeat as necessary. Please DO NOT use chemicals, scrubbing brushes, scourers or any other harsh item as they will very likely scratch the top and then you will have a much worse problem.

  3. Sprinkle Ajax on the stove, get a wet paper towel and scrub to lather up. Then put more wet paper towels and cover the stove with them. let it soak for 5-10 minutes and then remove towels, clean excess and buff with dry paper towels

  4. Go to the Auto Zone or equivalent, and buy some  purple power.  spray it on, wait a few, clean off with rags or paper towels.  it works really well.  be careful using on fabrics.

  5. I would try some TSP and mix as directed on the box. Just wash them in the mix. If needed you can use a little steel wool to get off anything left. They should come up looking like new.

  6. Get some Soft Scrub, let it sit on the stove for about 10 minutes, use a lot of it.  Then sprinkle some borax over the Soft Scrub, then scrub it with a good scrubber and ever a brush.  That is the best way I know how.  The key is letting it saturate the scum.

    Good luck!

    :-)

  7. Easy Off oven cleaner, or any other brand.

  8. Easy-off makes a stove surface cleaner that's like a liquid car wax. It's a bit corrosive, so wear rubber gloves. But, you just use a damp terry cloth to apply it. I found it helps to let it sit for a few minutes after applying. Then use the cloth to scrub the gunk off the surface.

After scrubbing, let it dry to a powdery film, like car wax does. Then buff it clean with a soft dry cloth. If the stovetop is a dark color and you get streaks after buffing, you can use something like Windex to remove the remaining residue.

Also, you can find stovetop surface cleaner in a spray can at the Home Depot (in the cleaning section). It sprays on, but you apply it like the Easy Off stuff. I use that for the ceramic-coated lid of my BBQ and it works great.
