How to clean a used whetstone

i have a very fine grit whetstone that has got "leaded up" with metal. it no longer sharpens. how do i clean the old metal residue off of it so it can sharpen again.

  1. It's going to take another stone.  Oil down each stone and rub the two together.  The coarseness of the other stone doesn't matter much, but I would definitely use a coarser one as it will grind down the embedded metal faster.  I regularly resurface some small arkansas "slips" on a diamond lap.  I know someone that has recommended resurfacing stones on a flat piece of concrete like your sidewalk.  I've used this method as well.  Not only will it clear the metal, but if your stone is uneven, it make it level & flat again.


  2. Use a mid grit diamond sharpening stick. They are surprisingly inexpensive. It will remove the metal residue very easily. Be careful not to overheat the diamond stick.
