  1. Sterling silver?  Warm water, mild soap, soft cloth.

toothpaste and commercial polish is damaging to sterling (or so sez the little "how to care for your new necklace" booklet that came w/a lovely sterling gift).

Good luck - oh, don't wear the jewelery while showering or applying lotions - gunks it up.

  2. Things You’ll Need:

    1/4 cup baking soda

    1/4 cup salt

    1/4 cup liquid dish soap

    1/2 gallon water

    Large pot

    Aluminum foil

    Big plastic stir spoon

    Colander or strainer

    Towel

    Stove top

    Step1

Line the inside of large pot with aluminum foil.

    Step2

Pour all ingredients into the lined pot and stir with plastic spoon.

    Step3

Gather the sterling silver jewelry that needs cleaning and gently drop them into the pot. Be sure to count the silver to ensure nothing gets thrown out later with the aluminum foil.

    Step4

Bring the solution to a low boil. Let boil for about 4-5 minutes.

    Step5

Remove from heat. After the solution cools a bit, use a colander or strainer and pour out contents of pot. Rinse with cool water.

    Step6

Count your pieces as you lay them on a towel to dry.

The foil will be dark since it collects the oxides from your jewelry, so be extra careful not to throw any clean silver out as you discard the foil.

This solution also cleans gold jewelry very well.

  3. Toothpaste. Works like a treat. Apply small amount of toothpaste. Leave for ten minutes or so, then shine it off with cloth. If bits of toothpaste get in the cracks just rinse it off with water.

  4. my mom used to clean it with toothpaste and sometimes vinegar

  5. Hot soapy water, as hot as you can stand it then polish it with jewelry polish.

  6. believe it or not, toothpaste works great.

  7. I went to my local Wal-Mart and purchased some cleaner for silver jewelery.   Works great, my silver jewelery looks as bright and shiny as the day I bought it.  It was very inexpensive (i.e. $5-6 Canadian) for the cleaner.  Comes with the solution, a tray and a mini-brush all packed into a jar.
