  1. Scrub well with soap and water. Then use a 50/50 mixture of bleach and water to sanitize it.

  2. Some kinds of pet shampoo contain pertinans (spell?) which are a poison. If it were me I would not use that barrel.

If you can find some that were used with Simple Green or other 100% biodegradeable ingredients then I would consider using them.

As for proper storeage mix of water in 55 gallon barrels. 1/4 cup per gallon will keep the barrel for at least 3 months. It must remain sealed and kept cool. Then at the end of the three months empty the barrel. Reclean it with 50/50 bleach solution of about 5 gallons Rises twice and refill with the 1/4 cup per gallon of water solution for storeage again.

I have three in my shed just in case. Plus I have a swiming pool to wash with so I am well covered.

  3. Bleach will work but you need to ask yourself a few questions first:

Will I drink all this water within a few days?  Standing water not cooled enough or hot enough will grow bacteria and make you sick.  Saving water is fine if you vacuum seal it or keep it frozen.
