How to clean-up silicone after it has cured. Any solvents?

Is there any chemical method of removing silicone (adhesive) such as acids, paint thinner, chloroform, alcohol etc.?

  1. Chemicals may "melt" it and make a mess. Use a sharp utility knife and cut away what you don't want.


  2. If the silicone is on fiberglass, porcelain, or tile, you might be able to move it with silicon caulking remover. You'll find it in either the paint or the plumbing department of your local home centre or hardware store. Apply per instructions and scrape off the old silicone with a plastic scraper. Remember to wear eye and hand protection - caulking remover may be made from a natural product but it's not benign. (I say this only because too many people think "natural" means "gentle" or "non-irritating". The worst poisons and the most irritating chemicals are natural.)


  3. you can buy silicone remover....specifically for the job....vinegar works quite well too....

  4. At the foundry that my husband runs they use a silicone release spray.  You could probably use that a razor blade if the surface allows.

    The spray is an industrial strength of Pam cooking spray.  So try the grocery store version and just use a bunch,.
