How to cleanse/wash a reusable plastic water bottle?

I have one of those "unbreakable" and tough plastic water bottles that you can reuse for the rest of your life. BUT, I haven't been using it because it smells weird. If it smells weird, I think it's dirty. I want to know how to "properly" clean the bottle and thus, getting rid of the funky smell. Besides hot water and a little soap, is there another way?

~~I throw mine in the dishwasher and they come out great. I never use the heating element though, so I would suggest you turn that off. Then let it dry well and you'll be set.~~

Rinse with rubbing alcohol and let it sit and sanatize for a few min. Then rinse very well with water and then wash as usual with dish soap and hot water.

Use a bottle brush.You can't clean it properly without one. You can buy them in the cleaning aisle of the grocery store, or a baby bottle brush you can get in the infant section.

Probably just the chemicals in it. Try filling it with half vineger and half water and letting it set for a day or two.

You could even put baking soda in it close the lid and just let it sit. (no water)
