For Internet Explorer: Click on Tools. Then Internet Options. Click on Content and then Auto Complete. Then click on Clear Forms. This will erase your search history. If you don't want things showing up again in your search history then deselect the Auto Complete options at the top. Be sure to select apply or ok at the bottom.

At any search site the drop down list is maintained by the auto complete function of the browser. That is the way names and addresses are filled in for you. You can turn the option off in internet options.

In IE go to tools - internet options - content - autocomplete - settings - forms (delete if desired).

In Firefox go to tools - options - privacy - remember what I enter in forms and the search bar.

To delete the items in just one box do the following. Double click in the "empty" box. Drop down to the first item and keep pressing the delete key until they are all gone.
