  1. Hold the bird gently in your left hand and trim his first 4 flight feathers on each wing, just to the coverts.  Then using a fingernail clipper, just clip the tips off the nails.

This does not hurt anymore than cutting your hair/nails hurts.

Do not cut any small feathers just coming into to his first 4 flight feathers.  They still have blood in them as they are new.

  3. Feather and nail trim in birds is very easy but make in an inadequate way could be dangerous because could cause serious bleeding in the bird. Please check out these links:

Any doubt, ask to an avian vet. Maybe you need to see once how to do it, and after you could do it for yourself.

Is prefer to trim just a little until adquire practice

  4. Get a vet to do it.  If you do it & hurt or annoy your bird he won't trust you for awhile & vets are experts at it so are less likely to cause harm.

If you were your bird, would you want an amateur doing it?

  5. You shouldn't attempt to do it yourself, you should get the vet to do it and show you the correct way. Then you can do it yourself the next time.

If you cut the nails too short or your bird moves they could start bleeding, a small amount of blood loss can be fatal as a bird doesn't have a great deal of blood, you ned a styptic pencil or powder handy just in case to make the blood clot and so stem the blood flow.
