Question:

How to come to a stop driving a Manual?

I've been driving an automatic for the last 3 years and have never learned to drive a5speed. I just bought one and have only driven it about 2 blocks and didn't go over 25mph. I just watched a video on youtube and I didn't have too many problems driving around.

The only thing i'm not sure of is how to brake, or come to a stop at a light. What do i do if i have to slowly stop, and what if I have to stop immediately? For example, lets just say I am going 40 and I'm coming up to a red light.

  1. If you have plenty of time and space, downshifting 1 gear at a time is a good idea. If the light goes green, or whatever the reason for slowing down is now gone, you are already in the right gear to continue on. If you know that you are going to come to a complete stop, it really doesn't matter. Whatever is most comfortable for you. However, it is much easier on the brakes to let the engine help slow you down whenever possible.

  2. It is not recommended that you immediately push in the clutch or shift into neutral—that's basically coasting around with no way to accelerate in case something happens.

To come to a stop at a light, brake in whatever gear you are in. As you get to about 1000rpm, you'll be going pretty slow, and you can push in the clutch and shift to neutral, and a couple seconds later you'll have completely stopped.

At a stop sign you'd do the same thing but hold the clutch in and get ready to shift into 1st as soon as you stopped or while you're almost stopped.

  3. the car  in front of you  should  help...go learn in a safe area...away from other people..

  4. 40 mph, or 64km/h is still a brake-able speed, all you need to do is to step and hold the clutch, and your right leg slowly and steadily pushing down the brake pedal. If you're in a higher gear, do the same, but when your clutch is in, you need not fear of anything. However, if you need to downshift, firstly shift to 3rd, then 2nd, after that you can straight go to neutral. If you're coming to a halt, just shift to neutral, then start braking with both hands controlling the steering. If you're nervous, you can keep you left leg on the clutch rather than the footrest.

  5. I would downshift 3,2, and then 1 while using the brake as well...

  6. Since you're new, I would just press in the clutch all the way and brake like you would in an automatic. If the light turns green, just drop the clutch and keep going or downshift a gear then let out the clutch and keep going.

  7. push the clutch in and put it in neutral and let go of the clutch and just push the break in.. Its the easiest way

  8. Down shifting as you slow your speed is easier on your motor. To stop a manual transmission car, press the clutch and the brake.

  9. For now.. push in the clutch, and apply the brake...

Once you get better you can learn to slow down by down shifting...

  10. press in on the clutch, then brake normally.
