  1. The simple answer is: take the total value today and divide it by the value when you bought it. Express the number as a percentage.

    Things become uglier if you bought stocks and the like on different days. Then you have to weight the numbers for the invested capital, the holding period, add dividends.

    It's easy to do with an Excel spreadsheet, using for instance the NPV and IRR functions.
