How to configure file downloads?

Recently my PC got a new hard drive put in, (Windows XP OS) and when I download files, it doesn't properly configure the file. I think I've got HP5 or something as my download manager.

Say for example, I download a .zip e-mail attachment, when I download it, the icon appears as a Wordpad rather than a zip icon. (if that makes any sense)

When I try to open it, it doesn't. I've tried downloading a download manager, which doesn't work because it didn't configure the installer file right.

So, where do I go on my PC to configure it?

If there is a file extension recognition problem with your PC, you might be able to fix it.

Once you have downloaded that .zip file, do this.

>> Go to Start>Control Panel>Folder Options.

>> Go to the View tab and in the list that appears, look for the entry Hide Extensions for Known File Types.

>> Untick this entry.

>> Click on Apply and then OK.

>> Now, see which file extension your downloaded file has. Does it have any other extension other than .zip?

If It Has A .zip ext - Right click>Properties>Change button, and select WinZip from the list, or if not present, Browse and find it.

If It Has Any Other Extension - Right Click>Rename and type in any name but just put in .zip in the end. Even then if it doesn't open, right click and follow the step in the option I gave above.

If your Download Manager still errs, download some other one such as Free Download Manager, or else use the internal Internet Explorer/Firefox downloader itself. Download the installation file of a Download Manager and rename it as downloadmanagername.exe. Then run it.
