  1. You DO NOT want to get a PCI firewire card - they're for desk top PCs, not laptops!  I don't know which Pavilion you've got, but if it hasn't already got a firewire port make sure you know whether it uses PCMCIA or Express expansion cards - they're not interchangeable.

  2. i.link, IEEE1394, and Firewire are all the same thing -- get a Firewire cable (runs about $20 at most retailers, $5 if you buy it online), make sure your computer has a firewire port (PCI card -- $30 at retailers, $15 online), and just connect the two.  You'll need some kind of software to receive the data (Sony Vegas 4.0 is a good free program, or Pinnacle, or Ulead, or... tons of them out there), and you're all set.

Just make sure your computer's quick enough to handle the stuff.  You'll want at least 512mb RAM (more is better) and 40gig harddrive -- those are BARE MINIMUM.  The bigger those numbers the better.

  3. You need to get the proper iLink/firewire cable. Consult your camcorder manual. There is a whole section devoted to it.
