  1. a wireless router

  2. You can do this using ad-hoc mode, but using a router is the best way.  Using a router is called infrastructure mode.

I also want you to keep in mind that there is a technology called powerline.  I mention this because people do not secure their wireless networks.  Sometimes you can get interference from other wireless networks.  Check this out: http://www.cnet.com/4520-7390_1-6274537-...

Wireless makes sense money wise because your laptop probably already has wireless.  If you do not already have a router, you might want to check this out: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...

This gives you a powerline wireless router.  It also gives you wireless for your laptop.  You can use powerline for the desktop if it is not near your router.

Once you get everything connected, you need to go to the Network Sharing Center in Vista.  You get there simply by typing in Network Sharing Center when you click Start.  You must turn file sharing on in both computers.  You must also open up ports 137 to 139 on your software firewall.  You might want to open up another question on how to do this because we don't know what security software you have on your computer.
