How to connect ethernet PC adapter

Question

My laptop is currently connected to the internet through my modem (via usb cable). My home phone is connected to an analog telephone adapter; the internet cable is connected to my modem and the ethernet cable is usually connected to my laptop until recently when the ethernet port on my laptop fried during a thunderstorm. My home phone has no dial since. I went out and bought a PC card with an ethernet port. I installed it, but it doesn't seem to pick up a connection. I called the manufacturer and I was told that I don't need a PC card, he said I need a router. I don't think this solves my problem since I need an ethernet port to connect my home phone. I am planning on going to the store where I purchased the PC card, but what can I do to connect my PC card to the internet? If you know of any video tutorials, it would be great if you would let me know. Thankyou.

if i read this correct the manufacturer is correct  if you got a simple router switch not wifi  you could plug in the router to the modem then the phone pc card into that   and if you should opt  for a wifi and your comp has wifi you should be good to go all around....  yes you do  unless if  I read your question correctly you would have to ethernet cable it to router    the wifi was for the comp

if you have no dial tone then it usually means that the DSL going to the modem has been cooked, and quite possibly the filter, replace all the filters and you must have dial tone, contact your ISP and they will repair this.

EDIT: remember you can only have either the usb or an ethernet connected to your computer they will not work properly if you use both at the same time(this is why they suggest a router).

EDIT 2: you must also remove or disable the fried card damaged during the thunderstorm.

Well the guy you call is right.You have a pc card which only connect if you have a wireless router.Yu cant just pick up a signal using the cable modem unl;ess u connect with an ethernet cable or usp.Did you say you phone is fried? do you have cable internet or phone line?I am a bit confuse what the phone has to do with the cable internet.Eitherway,the pc card you bought still needs to plug directly to the modem for it to work.whatever you bought should have been a pc card for the laptop which you slide into the card slot on the laptop.you need to pull that piece out and slide the card into the slot. still u need a wireless router connected to the modem therefore your pc card picks up a sgnalk since you cant connect using the usp port thats fried.Otherwise, repair the usp port
