How to connect my old DVD/VCR combo to my new Sony Bravia?

The only thing that came with my DVD player is a coaxial cable and that doesn't seem to work when I connect to my television. Other than that, I don't have any other cables.

  1. The problem you are probably seeing is that the VCR will work through the coax cable on channel 3, but the DVE doesn't work. Most DVD/VCR combos do NOT have a built in modulator to allow DVD viewing on channel 3.

You will need to buy a modulator (low quality video) or a video cable - find the one that is on the player and the TV (you will also need Red / White audio cable): lowest quality to highest

    yellow RCA - composite video

    round 4 pin - S Video

3 RCA Red Blue Green - Composite

    Good Luck

  2. If you use the coaxial cable, make sure your TV is on the correct channel (it's either 3 or 4) when the VCR/DVD is turned on.  That's the easiest thing to do.

I prefer getting Composite (yellow + red/white audio) because it's compatible with most things and provides slightly better quality than coax.

If both your DVD/VCR and TV support it, you can get higher quality with S-Video (S-Video + red/white audio); or Componant (red, blue, green + red/white audio) and hooking up to INPUT on the TV.  These provide a better quality picture (least to best, in the order I listed) ASSUMING your new TV has the right hookups and the DVD/VCR has those outputs.  Lowe's or WalMart have the cables cheapest - about $10 depending on what kind.

    Good luck!
