How to connect passive sub to av receiver?

how to connect my passive sub to my av receiver i have an external stereo amp but how would i connect this to the av reciver i have tried the only thing i get is humming from my 2 subs on my external there are sub help?r aux tape cd and phono but still no idea how to connect passive

Your receiver should have a sub or LFE output than you would run to the input of the amp. The output of the amp would go to your subs.
