My XP Pro computer in my room is downstairs and connects to the internet wirelessly (Our modem and router are upstaris), but after a reboot (long story), I reinstalled the driver for the SMC network card (long name is SMCWPCIT-G 108Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter), but there is still no connection. Under Wireless Network Connection it does not show the network, and no matter what it won't connect. Repairing the connection doesn't work, so any suggestions on how to try to get the conncetion.

  1. It sounds like the wireless connection may be both encrypted, and not broadcasting its ID. Check the router setup from one of the wired PCs upstairs and see how it needs to be set up.

  2. First guess... Are you sure you got the right drivers?

Are there any events in Event Viewer?  Go to Start > Run > Type compmgmt.msc > Click Event Viewer

Do you have another computer to test on (a friends), to make sure its not the Wireless Access Point, or something you might be doing wrong on yours?

Is there software that comes with the SMC that works outside of Windows software?

  3. Call your ISP. Did you reset the modem and the router? It may have changed some settings. When you reset, it makes it go back to default settings.

However, if you changed things on your pc, like why did you have to re install the driver? You may need to make sure the wireless componet in windows, called wireless zero is enabled.
