we have a linkys router and we got a new laptop.

and the other laptop was bought in 2006.

When one computer has internet connection, the other does not.

and if I turn off the computer that HAS the internet connection, the other is able to get internet connection.

long time ago, two laptops were able to share the same DSL. why is it not working now?

  1. Powerline is another way you can go.  Watch this video: http://www.cnet.com/4520-7390_1-6274537-...

  2. is there a modem of some kind? does it go from modem...to router to laptops?

  3. Very limited information here, but it sounds like you're having mixed mode wireless problems.  You should make sure that the Linksys wireless router is set for mixed-mode wireless.

Make sure the DHCP in the Linksys has a sufficient range of addresses to serve.

You could also try specifying on the new laptop which wireless mode to run in - in the connection manager software.  Likely if your Linksys is older, it is b or g, and a new laptop would most likely be n, in which case you should down grade the setting to either b or g in case for some reason it isn't negotiating that automatically.

  4. The incoming signal should first go the the modem >

    next to the router >

then the computers can connect to the router.

If the router unit is dual modem+router

possibly the "router" half is not working anymore,

OR it needs to be reinstalled.

Go to Device manager and DISable the router >

restart your computer > for both computers >

then go into Device Manager again and make sure the router is ENabled.

    Restart computers

Make sure the second new computer has the router key enabled/set-up also.

    That should do the trick.

    Glad to help
