I am trying to add some new vista machine to my active directory. i am able to add XP machines with out a problem. when i try to add a vista PC it asks for my user and pass (ok) but then i get this.

<Start

The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "mydomain":

Am attempt to resolve the DNS name of a DC in the domain being joined has failed. Please verify this client is configured to reach a DNS server that can resolve DNS names in the target domain.

<End

I don't know y I'm getting this with vista and not on XP, XP is working fine! I would like any help you have but PLEASE don't just say "don't use vista" as that part is not up to me.

Thanks for any help

  1. I think the easy fix is just be sure the server IP is listed in the DNS servers of the Vista machine, If not you can specifically add that to the DNS list then the "mydomain" will be found.

Add: if you have a router that issues the DHCP addresses, add the DC (the server machines IP) to the DNS lists in the router!

Also be sure you have Vista Business (not home) to join a domain!
