I have a home cinema amp, DVD player. That has an RS232 socket on. But how do I use it.

I understand that its better than IR control because the comms is 2 way...is this right.

  1. You need to buy the wire which you connect i think its male and female.

  2. I'd guess it's to allow you to connect it to a PC (probably an old-ish one with an equivalent connector) and update the software. I can't see why you'd use it instead of an IR remote control - you'd need a cable and a PC, hardly convenient!

  3. RS-232 controls are used by professional installers in home-theater installations.

For example, in a console, there would be the option "watch movie". When you press it, it turns everything on, set the input of the TV to DVD, etc.

You can do the same with a remote that can send discrete codes (like Pronto or Harmony).
