How to convert an avi video to mp4

i downloaded a movie and its avi but i want to put it on my ipod so i have to convert it to mp4. is there a good converter i can download?

If you are on a mac, you can use a program called iSquint that will convert the movie for you.

You might be able to just import the AVI into iTunes directly and it will either convert it into an mp4 or at least give you the option of converting it once it is in your library.  Not sure, as I've always used iSquint
