Question:

How to convert your gas tank to take alternate fuels?

I have read about how easily other countries convert their gas tanks to accept other fuel source. I hear the occasional story here, about successful gas tank conversations.

Is this something that can be done easily. Can I learn how...and charge others? Is this a good business venture.

  1. which alternate fuels are you referring to? with ethanol or diesel you only need change the fuel lines, and remove any plastic from the tank. if you are talking about fuels like LPG, cng, etc. these fuels require that you swap the stock fuel tank for one that can handle high pressures, usually about 350psi or so. you also need to change other parts of the fuel system like the carb or fuel injection to a "propane" carb. this meters a gaseous state fuel in the proper amounts for combustion.

  2. I've never heard of modifications nor fuels that require swapping out a fuel tank.

Perhaps you're talking about diesel motors running on cooking oil, which requires a heater so the oil doesn't gel, as well as increased filtering...

Otherwise I have heard some stories about fuel 'doping' where propane and occasionally hydrogen are injected into the fuel in the fuel injection system, both reducing amount of fuel used as well as making higher energy fuel.

  3. did you mean at the gas station?

    or in your car?

i'm guessing that if you're that unclear about what you want, it's unlikely to be a good business venture.

  4. Get an LPG conversion. In Australia the government gives up to a $2000 rebate to cover the cost of the LPG conversion.
