  1. The simplest way would be to purchase a kit from someone like "EV Concept's " , or http://www.e-volks.com. Basically you remove all the fuel related componets, gas tank, exhaust, engine, gas gauge, anything that you will no longer be using, then you add an electric motor, controller and batteries, vacuum pump(for the brakes) and new gauges to meassure volts and current, I think the preffered donor cars are standard shift, but  I'd imagine that an automatic could be used.

  2. How about replacing the drive train with one from an electric hybrid? The big problem is that the motor costs about $1000. Then there's the batteries, controls, etc. But it CAN be done, I've seen some pretty good sites showing how.

  3. Not a problem. Thousands of people convert gas cars to electric.  How to do this is widely understood, and you should have no trouble finding information on the Web and people in your area who have done this.

One of the first pieces of advice you'll get is ditch the automatic for a manual tranny.  An automatic will waste 10-20% of the motor's energy, because it's designed to deal with the limitations of a gasoline engine.   Replacing it with a manual will also give you a wide variety of gear ratios to match the motor to the road.  You don't have to "shift" an electric car,  however having a transmission lets you pick the most efficient gearing for the motor, and also gives you another way to select "reverse".

  4. If you're going to use the truck like a truck is built to be used, you'll want to leave the gas engine in there.  Electric motors just don't have the same power.  It would probably be cheapest to buy a little car and fool around with that.  You won't need as expensive of a motor then.

  5. Well, you can't convert a gas engine to run on electricity. But, you could replace the entire drivetrain as suggested above (at almost the same amount of money as buying a new vehicle).

Why not look into converting your engine over to run on natural gas? The existing engine can be used, all you need is an adapter that goes under the existing carb. to feed the natural gas to the engine., a tank, and a regulator. The cost is very resonable and you could do it yourself.

Almost every city uses it for fleet trucks. It's cheaper, cleaner, and the engines run a lot longer because the fuel is so clean..

You also save money on oil changes because you can usually double the distance between changes.

I have an '83 Chevy C-10 that I converted to propane in 1987. The truck currently has over 300,000 miles & still runs great. I average about 19mpg too.

  6. It might be more cost efficient just to buy a Prius then to do all that.

  7. Take out the motor and transmission and throw it away. That is just the start.
