How to convince a 20 year old to finish getting his high school diploma?

My boyfriend is 20 years old and has been home schooled his whole life. Once he got to high school he started working and eventually stopped doing school. I really think he should get his high school diploma and move up in life but he refuses to finish because he thinks high school isn't "justified". How in the world do I convince him that finishing would give him more opportunities and that it's "justifiable"?

  1. I think that this is something your boyfriend is going to have to decide for himself. In order for him to take the classes seriously and spend the time needed to graduate, he is going to have to want to be there...not because someone else talked him into going. You could gather some info on what your boyfriend would have to do in order to graduate, give it to him and let him know you support his decision.

  2. A diploma doesn't really give you more opportunities.  Case in point:  My husband, (who is 25, and we've been together 5 years) never stepped foot in a high school.  He finished middle school and simply decided he was done.

He makes 70k a year and is in management at the company he works for.

I finished high school and went on to several retail, clerical, and cleaning jobs making an income below poverty level for years.

A diploma is a piece of paper that doesn't mean much these days!

Encourage your boyfriend to do well in life, not on a test to get a piece of paper.  It is his decision, and it seems he's already made that decision with his stance on how it isn't "justified".
