I have an aunt who belongs to this Quixtar company, and she always wanted to get me and my cousin into it. My cousin and I hated the whole idea of network marketing because of the fact that all my aunt is doing is buying a lot of unnecessary things at home.

Last night i found out my cousin has finally give in to the temptation call "Market America". His reason for joining is

1. His friends are in it

2. Young people organization (not some mad mom quixtar)

3. The pretty picture of earning more than any professional

I swear these presentation really can brainwash people.

What really concern me is that my cousin actually said if everything goes well, he might as well drop out of college (aka giving up his pharmarcical goal).

  1. Quixtar is the new AmWay.  AmWay is MLM (Multi-Level Marketing) but is a very successful one.  It's along the level of Mary Kay and other large successful MLM companies.  While MLM isn't inherently bad, many people fail at it.  It is hard work, like being a used car salesman.

As long as he isn't dumping rent money or grocery money into this thing, the best way is just to let him do it.  If he's successful, you'll be happy for him and if not, it'll go away once he looses interest.  However, the most likely thing is that he'll make a few sales and get his money back then quit the business because strictly commission sales is rough.

Just let it slide for a while.  It'll work itself out.

  2. While I do respect your concern for your cousin, you just have to let people fly with these things in their own way. It's not your life and if you haven't been involved with these companies or the lifestyle it's not really your place to be a cynic yet. Some people become very successful with this stuff. It really depends on a persons drive and ambition. Not all companies are brain washers and have some very grateful people who excelled with them. Let him find his own way with it.

  3. I can understand your concern because of what happened to with your aunt. But I bet you network market! Have you ever gone to a movie or a good place to eat and told friends about it? Did they go, that's network marketing. Did the place of business pay you for sending those people to them?  Market America is set up more like a franchise, and is not set up as an MLM.  He can keep his goals and do MA, they even have a line that is only for people with medical licenses.  Would Google come to MA and ask to partner with them if they thought it was a scam.  Would MA have over 1000 partner stores like walmart, Macy's, old navy, and Starbucks.  I ask you to do this so you can be objective.  Go to a business presentation with your cousin only to be a critical observer.  Go looking for flaws, and problems. If you still see it as a brainwashing then at least you will be there for him. But at least be willing to see both sides.

  4. I think you'll find that, unless he really does start making money, he'll finally get tired of the fake party support-group environment and just give it up. It requires a lot of time and money to stay in those things, and unless his mom is going to $upport him through this, it won't amount to anything but lost money. Mom wants him to do it so she can "grow her group" and let him do the work for her. And maybe he'll realize that mom's not rolling in the dough, and he's not either before he's out too much money...and college.
