I will be 17 in August. My permit also expires in august. I just bought my first last weekend, and I've been practicing driving for months now with my folks. They both want me to take driver's ed but when I asked them WHEN I can take driver's ed, my dad said, "Well, driver's ed isn't going to make you a good driver. You need to have alot of driving experience BEFORE you take drivers ed." WTF?! The point of driver's ed is to get more driver experience, and pass the road test. HELLO! Also, I showed my mom the calendar yesterday, and july is very busy for us. Then my permit expires the second week in august.... So June is it. If I'm gonna take driver's ed, it's gotta be in the next two weeks. The problem, my parents won't sign me up! I WANT TO DRIVE! They love to smirk and say, "Driving a priviledge." Now, a couple of their friends told them that they won't let their kids get their license until they're 18! My parents are in no hurry, but I am! I want to get my license so bad!

  1. I agree that you need to take drivers ed, and there isn't any reason why you shouldn't take it right away. Even the best driver is not necessarily the best teacher. You should take the class now, from trained instructors, before you develop any bad habits. The class costs money too, I assume, and mom and dad may be trying to make ends meet. You could just take the test and skip drivers ed, but that would be a bad idea in the long run.

Paying for your insurance isn't a big deal. Wait til you pay for gas and maintenance too. Operating a car is ridiculously expensive as a teenager, and really requires a full time job to cover all the expenses. If you really want to drive bad enough, are you willing to cover ALL the costs? Maybe it isn't worth it. The economy sucks right now, and maybe mom and dad are tapped out financially, and it's just so much cheaper overall to drive you around.

I know you really really want to drive, but do you need to?
