I'm trying to convince a middle aged female friend NOT to buy a scooter ro ride to work on. She has never ridden and would need to commute at least 60 minutes a day to work, on busy roads. Ahe is trying to save on gas. I'm trying to find some acticles or stats to convince her that it is dangerous. Anything that you can suggest?

  1. She might do great.  And if worse comes to worse and she dies, she might die happy.  Life is too short not to take chances.  Let her live her life and rejoice in her choice.

  2. Trying to save on gas is great but try another way.  I had a cousin who would have turned 50 in August.  She bought a scooter, just for fun.  She had a learners permit, could only ride in the day.  Her husband had a motorcycle, they rode to my house because I live in the country, not much traffic.  We sat on my back porch and talked about turning 50 together this year, about our kids and how our life was going to focus on us now that we were older.  They left my house heading home and about 15 minutes later, she had an accident.  She was gone before her husband could walk to where she landed.  She left behind her husband, son, daughter and 5 grandchildren, the youngest 4 months old.  I will turn 50 by my self and all the plans we made together will never happen.  I would gladly pay $10 a gallon for gas if I could have my cousin back.  A scooter isn't worth the risk.

  3. take her to the local er on a sunny day.

  4. Yes, have  your freind take a motocycle saftey course first, they will teach her how to ride one.  Then they will teach her how to ride safely then you will be jealous of her and you will want one too.  Plus she will be saving fuel , mother earth, and looking cool on her scooter.

  5. Anybody with half a brain and proper instruction can operate a scooter.  Too often this is the case.  I've yet to see evidence a middle-age lady suffers from lack of brain power.  The jury of your peers is debating that of question source.

  6. Motorcycles and scooters can be dangerous.... But so can driving a car, crossing the street, taking the bus, flying a plane, etc....

If your friend has a good head on her shoulders and treats EVERYONE as though they do not see her, she should be OK.

Get her to take the STAR safety course, well worth the time and effort. What she learns there will help keep her safe more than constantly being reminded that it isnt safe... Nothing in life that is worthwhile is safe...

  7. Let your friend live her life,,,just make sure she has a life insurnace policy and puts you as a dependant pay out,,,thats a win win

  8. Your friend has a good idea.  Lessen our dependance on fossil fuels.  Good for her!  As far as the danger is concerned, if she has to take a class to get an endorsement on her license in order to ride the scooter, they will inform her of the dangers.
